American Flag Evolution

In the British colonies of North America before the Revolution, each of the 13 colonies had its flag. Few Americans, however, are aware that Betsy - who sewed the first American flag - was not the only flag maker in the early days of our republic. Indeed, numerous individuals are documented as flag makers and probably countless others were also engaged in the business of vexillography at that time.

Most flags of the eighteenth and early nineteenth century were either of two types; one was the “ceremonial” standard, generally made of expensive silk. These flags were often emblazoned with fancy allegorical or patriotic designs that were usually embroidered or painted on in oils. Often these designs were by some very talented or famous artist. The other type was the much more utilitarian flag, made of pieces of woolen bunting stitched into the final pattern and used on ships, at forts and anywhere a flag display was needed.

The 50-star flag has flown since 1960. On July 4, 2007, the 50-star flag became that which has flown over the country longer than any other design.
